Forever Barbie kitap kapağı8-12 yaş grubuna yönelik bir oyuncak olan Barbie’nin sevenleri kadar sevmeyeni de çoktur. Bu yaşlarda Barbie’yle oynamış 1960 ve 1970 doğumlu ebeveynler, değer verdikleri bu oyuncağı 3 yaşındaki çocuklarına oynasın diye alınca, dünyanın bu en ünlü kadını eleştiri yağmuruna tutulmuştur. Oysa 1820’ye kadar çocukların oynaması için üretilen tüm oyuncak bebekler birer yetişkin olarak tasarlanıyordu. Hatta çocuklar bile küçük birer yetişkin gibi giydiriliyordu.

Bu kitap, 2000’li yıllardan itibaren Disney prensesleri yüzünden kız çocukları üzerindeki etkisini yitiren, ekonomik krize hatta kişilik bunalımına giren Barbie markasının gayriresmî hayat hikâyesini anlatıyor. 1945 yılında kurulan Mattel şirketinin 1959 yılında New York Oyuncak Fuarı’nda Barbie’yi tanıtımından bu yüzyılın başına kadar olan sevgi ve nefret, kâr ve zarar öyküsünü okuyoruz.

Aynı zamanda Mattell’in kurucu ortaklarından Elliot Handler’ın eşi olan Ruth Handler’in fikri ve ikna çabası sayesinde şirket, çocuklar için bir yetişkin bebek üretmeyi kabul etmiştir. Charlotte Johnson ise Barbie’nin kıyafetlerini tasarlayan ilk tasarımcıdır. Yani bu başarılı kadının arkasında yine kadınlar vardır.

Kadının toplumdaki rolünün değişimi, kadın haklarının etkisi, feminizm hareketiyle birlikte Barbie’nin yansıttıkları da değişmiş midir? Sandığımızın aksine iki iş kadını tarafından piyasaya sürülen ilk Barbie bebekler de yaratıcıları gibi iş güç sahibi birer genç kadındı: Kabin görevlisi, hemşire veya model olarak çalışıyorlardı.
